General Questions

1. What do you mean by "virtual hosting"?

Virtual hosting is a system in which a single machine has many IP addresses. This allows a single machine to act as many separate systems. This is supported by all of the browsers in use today.

2. What kind of hit volume can the virtual hosting system support?

Our virtual host system is designed for a medium hit load of between 1 - 2 million unique hits a month. If a site begins to receive over this amount, web page response will begin to be affected. For web sites expecting large number of hits they should consider purchasing a dedicated server. Dedicated servers can accommodate well over 7 million unique hits a day.

3. At what speed will my server be connected to the Internet?

Our servers are connected directly to an OC-48 backbone, which is 44 times faster than a DS-3 or T-3. Our committed information rate on the OC-48 is much lower than the full 2.4Gbits/sec. As our bandwidth needs increase, we'll raise the committed information rate to handle the additional usage. Our requests for bandwidth upgrades go into effect within 48 hours of the request.

4. How long does it take to register a domain name?

Most new ".com" and ".net" names are registered within 1 business day. Until the domain name registration process is complete, the server can be accessed through FTP and the control panel for uploading of your site, and setting up e-mail addresses etc. We will send you information on accessing your control panel and FTP once we have setup your site.

General Virtual Host Questions

Maintenance of the host is done completely by the client. We give you full FTP control panel access to your account.

2. Do I have Shell privileges?

We do not allow Telnet access to our servers, but you have full FTP access to your account and your own control panel to manage e-mail addresses etc.

3. How do I get my web page stats?

It's easy! Go to your web based interface and click the "web statistics" button. The stats are automatically updated on a daily or weekly basis, depending on what you specify.

4. Are CGI scripts provided with the accounts?

You'll want to check out http://www.scriptarchive.com

You'll notice that most all of the scripts are free. This is one of the many advantages of using Unix. Also, most of these scripts come with complete documentation. But remember, you will have to configure the scripts for our servers. A major part of this is changing directory configurations. Make sure you read the documentation for the script carefully. If you need help in installing CGI scripts, we can do it for you for a fee of $55.00 per hour.

5. Can Perl be used?

The hosts come with version 5.00404. The hosts also come with other popular UNIX scripting languages that can typically be found on a Unix server.

6. How can I tell how much disk space I've used?

Log in to your control panel, and then click on the REPORT button. This will show real disk space used, real traffic etc.

FAQ Outline

Server Questions

1. What is SSL and "Netscape" encryption?

As a standard feature, we offer secure socket layer (SSL), frequently referred to as "Netscape" encryption. This allows a SSL compatible browser to communicate with your virtual host in a secure SSL encrypted session. It is often used to securely transfer credit card numbers and other sensitive information.

2. What is the cost for this feature?

It is free with any webhosting account.

3. How do I use SSL?

In order to use SSL, you need to change the URL to read https instead of http.

If you and/or your customers don't mind a warning message from the browser, you can also access your site securely by typing in https://www.yourname.com. The warning message states that the site certificate doesn't match the url the browser is accessing. The information, however, is still fully encrypted and safe.
